Caman to Croker
Monday, 08 April 2013 20:38
Last Saturday a dream came true for the Tulla U12 Camogie team who travelled to Croke Park to take part in Caman to Croker. This event was hosted by An Cumann Camogaiochta in association with Torpey Hurleys. A fantastic day was had by all the team, the mentors and the supporters who departed from Tulla at 7 in the morning. The sun was shining and everyone was in great form when we arrived - the girls went on the museum tour first and this was followed by their 3 matches against teams from Galway, Dublin and Armagh.
We were one of the very lucky 48 clubs to take part in the Caman to Croker with 720 camogie players participating on the day. This was a wonderful opportunity for our girls to represent their club and county in this fantastic stadium. We were delighted to take part in this very well run day and we hope that now the girls have had a chance to experience a day out in Croke Park that this will be the first of many for the girls in the future.
The players on the day were, Orna Mulconroy, Aoife Leyden, Alex O'Sullivan, Gillian Ryan, Aisling Clarke, Leah Molloy, Orla O'Brien, Leagh Hunt, Aisling Dooley, Nessa Flynn, Aoife Murphy, Aine Murphy, Aoife Halpin, Aoife Moroney, Kaylee Cahill, Allanna Crowe, Grainne Lynch and Molly B Nolan.
We would like to commend our mentors, Evelyn O'Brien, Seamus Murphy and Carol-Anne O'Sullivan for your continued dedication and enthusiasm in supporting the development of our young players.

East Clare Developement

Developing a sustainable and vibrant future for East Clare
Like many other parts of the country, East Clare has suffered the effects of the economic downturn, with many young people emigrating, increased levels of unemployment and a reduction of income for those that are working. Rather than accepting continued austerity, an East Clare Development group, chaired by Sean Bugler, has been established with an objective of developing a sustainable, prosperous and vibrant future for East Clare.
East Clare is blessed with an abundance of natural resources, which is very eloquently portrayed in the specially commissioned video ‘Welcome to East Clare’ (available on youtube), which has been compiled by Eoin O’Hagan of clarevirtually.ie. This reminds us all of the beauty that surrounds us and the opportunities on our doorstep.
One of the objectives of the group is to put together a Development Plan. There are three sub-committees established that will focus on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Sustainable Farming and Developing a Unique Tourist Experience. This will include working on initiatives to create, support and encourage local employment opportunities that will give our young people the option to live and work in their own community. Farming has been important in the past to East Clare and will equally be important into the future and this sub-group will work on driving initiatives that support sustainable farming in the context of Food Harvest 2020 for this area. The third sub-group will work to integrate and package a unique tourist experience for visitors to the area.
The group are being supported by Teagasc, one of the leading research organisations in Agri-Food and Rural Affairs. A presentation was made recently by the group to Dr David Merritt, (Teagasc ), Brendan Heneghan, Teagasc Regional Director for Clare / Galway and to Dr Jim Kinsella, Head of Agribusiness & Rural Development in UCD. Dr David Merritt complimented the progress made to date, the vision for the future and the willingness to proactively shape the future of East Clare.
It was agreed that a roadshow to share the message and mobilise communities from Tulla to KIllaloe and the surrounding areas was necessary to build momentum behind the initiative.
“This is an unimaginable opportunity for East Clare, to have Teagasc working on the ground with us”, according to Michael McGrath, a member of the East Clare Development group. He also noted that “Our location between Sliabh Aughtys and Lough Derg, our pristine environment, our precious culture and traditions, with farming being central to the way we have lived in the past and the way we intend to shape our future, will allow us to be unique and offer something different to sustain us into the future.”
Through a successful partnership with Teagasc, the group has secured 2 research students that will focus on East Clare. The group are delighted that a UCD Masters Student undertaking the MAgrSc Innovation Support Programme, Michael Kelly, has commenced a research project that will look at agricultural renewal and development in East Clare in the context of Food harvest 2020.
In addition, in September 2013, a Walsh Fellowship research project will commence, focusing on working with the community to create a development plan for East Clare.
The group is also working with the Commission for the Economic Development of Rural Areas (CEDRA), established by the Minister for Environment, Communities and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, which aims to develop a job creation strategy for Rural Ireland. As part of a public consultation programme, Pat Spillane will chair a meeting on 17 April in Scariff on the future economic potential of rural Ireland and how best to channel funding and resources between 2013 and 2025 in the context of East Clare. The aim of this meeting is to engage with a wide range of people, individuals, businesses and organisations that are interested in the future economic development of rural areas. It will also aim to generate new business ideas with the local community.
If you would like to find out more or you have a potential new business idea, please come along to the Jobs Initiative on 17 April and also, watch out for the Information Sessions on East Clare Development that will be happening over the coming weeks and months.
Tulla Community Council will be compiling a database of groups and companies that are in Tulla who might be interested in this. If this is something that you are interested in then please click the link below
